BRIEF

To design, engineer and manufacture a beam that can support a weight of 18kg, whilst fixed at one end.

OUTCOME

This project involved designing a beam which could support a weight of 18kg. A number of beam simulations and calculations were evaluated to compare a range of models and designs. Material properties were also investigated to determine the appropriate strength and overall weight of the beam required. A final design, which would be manufactured, was chosen by the team that offered the most promising results of weight support.

This design was then manufactured using a range of techniques including milling, drilling and lathing. A number of materials were used throughout the manufacturing of the beam, which ranged from steel wire to aluminium plate. Once the beam had been produced to specification, it was then tested with the 18kg weight to determineits overall strength. The beam successfully held the weight.
